Ingredients of a food product must be listed in descending order. Besides the fact that the nutrition facts table indicates that a certain food contains a solid protein and vitamin content, the source of ingredients is very important.
Bread is a good example. Grocery stores offer vitamin enriched breads, made from white refined flour. The main ingredients are either: white flour, wheat flour, flour, refined flour, enriched flour or enriched wheat flour. However, vitamins from cereal grain bread are more easily absorbed since their presence is natural.
Reading the nutrition facts table as well as its ingredients should always be considered. For example, let’s take a food product that displays 0 g of trans fat for a portion of 30 g. Keep in mind that a food that contains less than 0.5 g of trans fat per portion will display 0 g of trans fat on the chart.
If you consume at least 6 portions of this food and that it contains 0.4 g of trans fat, you will have consumed 2.4 g! The presence of hydrogenated fats could have been detected in the list of ingredients. Be a well-informed consumer!
