The cause of pneumonia is often a bacterial infection cause by Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can also be a serious complication of a viral infection, such as the flu or a cold.
Sometimes fungi such as Aspergillus fumigates cause the infection. Very often, part of one lung is infected in a condition more specifically referred to as lobar pneumonia.
If pneumonia is affecting both lungs, it can quickly become life-threatening requiring a trip to the ER.
If after a flu or a cold you keep on coughing, this may indicate pneumonia. But it could also be that you just got sick again. If it is accompanied by the following symptoms, it may indicate pneumonia:
When pneumonia is neglected with failure to treat in a timely manner, the pulmonary alveoli may weaken in such a way that the overall lung capacity is decreased.
Often a pneumonia is a complication of other diseases and indicates a very low resistance. Therefore, consult your doctor if you suspect pneumonia and they will most likely prescribe antibiotics. Lab testing includes a sputum culture to determine the cause while chest films will allow the physician to visualize which lobe or area has been compromised. They will also perform physical exams including listening to your breathing in various areas of the chest and back.

“This is very very bad advice that is against everything else I have seen. The largest relief for my pneumonia is drinking hot coffee, which heats up the phlegm and puss and allows me to cough it up. Eating fresh salmon also made me feel much better. Not sure where you info comes from but I'm glad I didnt find you first!”
